Scouting For Food – Helping To Feed Our Community

This past Saturday, our Scouts participated in the first part of the annual Scouting For Food event. Scouting For Food began in St. Louis in 1985 and is now a nation-wide BSA event. In the 32 years that the St. Louis Council has participated in the program, they have collected more than 55 million cans of food for local food pantries.

How it works

The main service project is just one day. However, for BSA units throughout the country, the Scouting For Food event spans 2 weekends. This past Saturday, our Scouts distributed donation bags to houses around our community. Each unit is assigned a specific area to ensure that every house is covered.

The bags serve as a reminder to residents that they need to place their food donations outside their door on the FOLLOWING Saturday, November 17. On that day, the Scouts will return to the same areas and collect everything that was donated.

All of the items collected are taken to the local food pantry to help those in need throughout our community. This is one of the great things about this service project…everything donated by those in our community STAYS in the community.

How To Help

It’s easy! Simply leave your food donations outside your front door by 9 AM on November 17. Scouts throughout the area will be covering the streets to collect the donated items.

Time To Celebrate!

Bag-distribution day requires a lot of hard work from our Scouts. They go to each and every house in our troop’s area handing out bags in preparation for next weekend. To say that it’s a lot of walking would be a huge understatement! So, to say THANKS to our Scouts for all of their hard work, our troop has a tradition of taking everyone our for lunch after we are done. Great job guys!
