Troop Elections Night – Choosing our next youth leaders
Our troop holds troop elections for our youth leaders about 3 times a year. At these meetings, our Scouts nominate and vote to determine which of their peers will help lead them for the next 4 months or so.
The BSA places a heavy emphasis on Leadership training. Scouts learn many things as they work on rank advancements and merit badges. That said, the overall theme for most activities is to teach various leadership skills. The program heavily emphasizes leadership at the Boy Scout level. At most meetings and events, it’s the youth who lead the troop…not the adult leaders. The adults are simply there to provide guidance and to step in if help is needed.
For this troop elections meeting, a number of the youth leadership positions remained unchanged. The guys felt that they wanted to essentially keep things as-is for the next few months. While it’s good to have the Scouts move around to different positions and levels of responsibility, at times it’s not a bad thing to give the current youth leaders another chance to refine their leadership skills.
