Troop 86 - Cooking Day

It’s a Great Time To Do Some Cooking

We unfortunately haven’t been able to get out camping lately, so we decided to refresh our cooking skills this Saturday morning.

Making progress…

Like many things in our lives this year, our troop has been forced to make a lot of changes. Troop meeting, meeting locations, events…nearly everything has been impacted by everything going on this year.

Our weekend camping routine has been affected the most. Normally we would be camping just about every month. This year is a different story. It’s has been months since our last camping trip. We’ve come close to going a few times, but it just hasn’t worked out.

This weekend, we managed to take another step forward…

Camp cooking

One of the things the Scouts seem to enjoy the most at our camping events is the cooking. Since we haven’t been able to do that in a while, we decided to spend our Saturday morning doing a little cooking just like we would do if we were on a camping trip.

We started the morning off with breakfast burritos. This is one of our regulars at camp, and it always turns out great.

Later in the day, the Scouts cooked a couple of lunches and also made an apple cobbler dessert. This gave all of the Scouts an opportunity to help with the various cooking and cleaning tasks. Needless to say, no one left hungry.

Cooking merit badge

Mixed in with all of the cooking, we also found time to start the Cooking Merit Badge. We have a number of “newer” Scouts, so this was a good opportunity for them to get started on this (somewhat lengthy) merit badge.

Keeping everyone safe and healthy

Fortunately, the weather cooperated, so we were able to do nearly everything outside. This was great because it allowed the event to (at least slightly) resemble one of our normal camping events.

Holding the event outside also helped with the current pandemic situation. Having the Scouts outside, along with a number of other safety requirements we enforced, allowed us to do what we could to help keep the Scouts safe while also continuing with the program.

Hopefully we will be able to continue to find creative ways to keep giving our Scouts opportunities to learn and having fun!
