Johnson Shut-Ins Weekend Campout

This past weekend, our troop went camping for the weekend at Johnson Shut-Ins, while also visiting Elephant Rock State Park.

Cooling Off at the Shut-Ins

It’s been hot for the past few weeks. We didn’t realize it when we booked this campout in January, but the timing of this trip was perfect. Johnson Shut-Ins is always fun, but it’s even better when you can get into the water during a hot summer day.

This has been a weekend destination for our troop for many years. There’s a special use area towards the back of the campground that is specifically for BSA and other youth groups. This is a fantastic site. There’s plenty of space. It has a huge pavilion. There’s even a bathroom and shower house right next to the site. It’s one of the few weekend camping destinations that actually offers the option for a shower!

Elephant Rock State Park

Given that it’s only about 30 minutes away, this trip almost always includes a visit to Elephant Rock State Park. This unique area offers lots of rocks for climbing and various paths that wind around the sites. We were threatened with rain while we were at the park, but fortunately, it missed us.
