Meeting Notes
This meeting was a recap and highlight of key items to consider, review, and complete in the near future. Below are some notes from the meeting.
Backcountry Commissaries
Commissaries are located at the following backcountry sites/camps:
- Ute Gulch
- Phillips Junctino
- Ponil
- Balde Towne
- rich Cabins
- Ring Place
- Miners Park
This year, ALL of the backcountry commissaries accept credit card payments.
Several of the commissaries sell white gas for stoves. (A list will be added here soon)
Gear
- Temp swings are fairly large at Philmont
- Prepare for hot and cold weather…sometimes on the same day
- Layers are great!
- Rain is common – Be sure to bring rain gear for yourself and your pack
Itinerary
- Review your itinerary now
- Note the availability of commissaries, water, etc.
- Keep preparing!
Crew Dynamics
- Choose crew positions BEFORE arriving at Philmont
- Practice those roles on shakedown hikes
Health and Safety
- Upload your health forms to the Gateway as soon as you have them
- Health forms are due before you arrive (Rosters must be complete by May 1)
- Bring copies of the health forms
- Philmont does not need these
- You will want to have them for travel
- Make sure you are within the height and weight requirements
- Call the infirmary if you have any health-related questions
- Do not forget your medications (Bring them in original packages – Can repack after check-in)
- If you have been prescribed an inhaler or EPIPen, bring them, even if you normally do not need them.
- Make sure your medical form includes Measles vaccination information.
- A Measles vaccination is not required, but if a situation arises and vaccination information is not provided, the assumption will be that you are NOT vaccinated.
- Ensure that each crew has 3 people trained in WFA and CPR
- It does not need to be the same 3 people
Food
- The backcountry menu is available now
- All participants should complete the special foods worksheet
- A link will be emailed to everyone soon
- Remember that any special food needs while in the backcountry must be provided by the participant. Philmont only provides alternatives while at base camp.
Basecamp
- There is a LOT packed into this first day
- Be prepared to start on time (or earlier)
- We may be able to start early since we plan to arrive the day before our first day
Check-In
- Anyone 18 or older needs to bring a photo ID
